Red Hot Mamas Summer 2004
Menopause Trivia
Attendants of June's Meeting were treated to both a quick review of menopause and a fast paced trivia game show on menopause, general knowledge and sports. We had a great turnout of men at the meeting, and they seemed to have a great time. Members from the audience composed "expert" panels on health questions and we all learned a lot about health, sports, and the intricate workings of game shows. Panel members were rewarded for their participation and bravery with gift certificates.
August 11 Natural Approaches to Menopausal Symptoms
What can I do about my hot flashes? Are natural treatments effective? Are they safe? How do I learn about them?
The transition into menopause is not usually easy. Hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings are just a few of the common symptoms. Because of the controversy surrounding estrogen and hormone replacement therapy, many women are turning to alternative treatments for relief. But there are many alternatives to choose from.
Dr. Ruth Pryor, Assistant Clinical Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and a member of the Women's Health Associates team, will discuss the popular natural remedies for some menopausal symptoms. She will review research behind both the Women's Health Initiative (hormone replacement therapy) and alternative treatments and which ones help. This promises to be an insightful and enlightening lecture. It will be held on August 11 between 7 and 9 PM at Mercy Medical Center. To register, please call Jan at 736-9978. Light refreshments will be served.
More to Come
The fall/early winter lecture series is under development. Check our website for the topics and dates. Handy schedule cards will be available at the August meeting.
Quick Facts Sunscreen
- The sun protection (SPF) indicates the amount of time the sunscreen provides protection - the higher the number, the longer the protection. In most cases, a minimum of SPF 30 is recommended. Reapplication does not increase the length of time allowed in the sun before burning.
- Sunscreen should protect against both ultraviolet (UVA) and UVB rays. Most products today contain Parsol 1789 rather than PABA. PABA is no longer recommended for children.
- Sunscreens should be replaced at least every three years, as they can lose effectiveness in protection.
- Water resistant sunscreens lose their SPF after 40 minutes in water; water-proof sunscreens lose effectiveness after 90 minutes.
- Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin including tops of the ears, exposed scalp, noses, and tops of feet and toes.
