  Red Hot Mamas- Fall 2004
October 01, 2004

Red Hot Mamas                                                                                             Fall, 2004

The Red Hot Mamas lecture series continues through the fall season and into early winter (see schedule below). At August's lecture, Dr. Ruth Pryor reviewed some of the many alternative treatments to hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms. Herbs, dietary changes, and prescription treatments are available, and some work better than others. Dr. James Wang reviewed the natural history of osteoporosis in September. This "silent" disease is likely to be the nation's top problem in a matter of years because of our aging population of women and men. Calcium and exercise are important tools in helping to build bone and prevent loss, but sometimes that is not enough.

In October, Dr. Robert Wool will discuss a topic that has long been ignored and now has become one of the more rapidly growing fields of medical research and treatment. In “Understanding Heart Disease and Menopause”, Dr. Wool will discuss the physiologic changes that occur during menopause, how they can affect the cardiovascular system, and how we can reduce our risk of heart attacks given some of the concerns regarding estrogen therapy.
